Most adults who want straighter teeth are not looking for the braces experience they had at 14. They want something that fits into a professional life, does not interfere with eating or socializing, and actually works. Clear aligners have made that possible for millions of people, and the technology has improved significantly in the last decade.
At Elite Dental Smiles in Dandridge and Jefferson City, we offer clear aligner treatment for adults and older teens who want to correct crowding, spacing, or bite issues without traditional metal braces. Here is what to know before you book a consultation.
How Clear Aligners Work
Clear aligners are a series of custom-made, removable plastic trays that gradually shift your teeth into their correct positions. Each tray is slightly different from the last, designed to move specific teeth by small, controlled increments. You wear each tray for about one to two weeks before advancing to the next one in the series.
The entire treatment plan is mapped out digitally before you start. Using 3D scanning technology, we create a precise model of your current bite and project exactly how your teeth will move from start to finish. You can see a preview of your final result before you ever put in a single tray.
The number of trays in your series depends on the complexity of your case. Minor adjustments may only require 10 to 15 trays. More involved cases can involve 30 or more. Throughout treatment, you visit the office periodically so we can confirm your teeth are tracking as planned and make any refinements needed.
What Clear Aligners Can Fix
Clear aligners are effective for a wide range of orthodontic issues that are common in adult patients:
Crowded teeth. When teeth do not have enough room to sit properly in the jaw, they overlap and rotate. Crowding makes cleaning difficult and increases the risk of cavities and gum disease. Clear aligners create space and align crowded teeth into a healthier, more functional position.
Gaps between teeth. Spacing issues occur when there is too much room in the jaw relative to tooth size. Gaps can result from missing teeth, small teeth, or simple genetics. Aligners close gaps gradually and hold the result in place with a retainer afterward.
Overbite. An overbite occurs when the upper front teeth overlap too far over the lower front teeth. A mild to moderate overbite can often be corrected with clear aligners. More severe cases may require additional appliances or orthodontic collaboration.
Underbite. When the lower teeth sit in front of the upper teeth, it is called an underbite. Mild underbites are within the range of clear aligner treatment. Significant underbites may require a combination of aligners and other orthodontic approaches.
Crossbite. A crossbite means some upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth when biting down instead of outside. This causes uneven wear and can contribute to jaw pain. Clear aligners can correct many crossbite situations effectively.
Open bite. When the upper and lower front teeth do not meet when the back teeth are together, it is called an open bite. This is often associated with past thumb-sucking habits or tongue posture. Clear aligners can close open bites in many cases.
Clear Aligners vs. Traditional Braces
Clear Aligners
- Nearly invisible when worn
- Removable for eating and cleaning
- No food restrictions
- Fewer office visits required
- Smooth plastic, no bracket irritation
- Requires strong patient compliance
Traditional Braces
- Visible metal or ceramic brackets
- Fixed, not removable
- Restrictions on sticky or hard foods
- Regular adjustment appointments
- Wires and brackets can irritate cheeks
- Compliance built in, always working
For most adults, the removability of clear aligners is the biggest advantage. You eat normally, brush and floss without navigating hardware, and go through your workday without anyone noticing your orthodontic treatment. The tradeoff is that the treatment only works when you are wearing the trays. Patients who remove their aligners too often or forget to put them back in will experience delayed results or need additional trays to get back on track.
The Clear Aligner Treatment Process
Starting clear aligner treatment at Elite Dental Smiles involves a few straightforward steps:
Consultation. We examine your teeth, take digital scans or impressions, and evaluate whether clear aligners are a good fit for your case. If you have active gum disease or cavities, those are addressed first. Orthodontic treatment on unhealthy teeth does not produce lasting results.
3D treatment planning. Using your digital scan, we map out the full movement sequence for your teeth. You can see exactly how your teeth will move and what your final result is projected to look like. We review this with you before any trays are ordered.
Receiving your trays. Once your custom trays are fabricated, you come in to pick up your first few sets and get oriented on how to insert and remove them, how to clean them, and what to expect in the first week.
Progress check appointments. Unlike traditional braces that require monthly adjustments, clear aligner check-ins are less frequent. We typically see patients every 6 to 10 weeks to verify your teeth are tracking as planned and provide your next sets of trays.
Refinements. In some cases, after the initial series of trays is complete, minor refinements are needed to fine-tune the result. This is normal and is factored into treatment planning.
Retainers. After active treatment ends, retainers are required to hold your teeth in their new position. Teeth have memory and will shift back without retention. Most patients wear retainers nightly long term.
How Much Do Clear Aligners Cost in Dandridge?
Clear aligner treatment in East Tennessee typically ranges from $3,000 to $6,500 depending on the complexity of the case. Minor corrections at the lower end of that range, comprehensive full-arch treatment at the higher end.
Many dental insurance plans that include orthodontic benefits will apply those benefits toward clear aligner treatment. Our Dandridge office is fee for service, meaning we do not work with insurance networks, but we are happy to provide documentation for you to submit to your plan for reimbursement. Our Jefferson City office accepts most dental insurance plans.
We offer financing options that spread the cost over manageable monthly payments. Most patients find that when broken down monthly, clear aligner treatment is significantly more affordable than they expected.

Common Questions About Clear Aligners
How long does clear aligner treatment take?
Treatment time varies based on the complexity of your case. Minor crowding or spacing issues may be corrected in 3 to 6 months. Moderate cases typically take 9 to 18 months. More complex tooth movement can take up to 24 months. Your dentist will give you a projected timeline based on your specific treatment plan before you start.
How many hours a day do you have to wear clear aligners?
Clear aligners must be worn 20 to 22 hours per day to stay on track. You remove them only to eat, drink anything other than water, brush, and floss. Wearing aligners fewer than 20 hours a day will slow your treatment and may require additional trays to get back on course.
Are clear aligners as effective as braces?
For most mild to moderate orthodontic issues, clear aligners are just as effective as traditional braces. They move teeth by applying consistent, controlled pressure through a series of custom trays. Severely crowded teeth, significant bite problems, and certain rotations may still be better suited to braces, but the vast majority of adults who want straighter teeth are excellent candidates for clear aligners.
Do clear aligners hurt?
Most patients experience mild pressure or soreness for the first day or two after switching to a new tray. This is normal and is a sign the aligners are working. The discomfort is typically much less than what patients experience with braces, and it fades quickly as your teeth begin moving into their new position.
